Re: Vermont 2nd Brigade at Gettysburg

Mr. Gerow....It was Stannard's men that I referred to in my post. Maybe you should read it again. They saw little action more than travelling the countryside of Virginia for 8-1/2 of their nine month "tour". The missed the action on the first day at Gettysburg and their position on the field kept them out of the fight on the second day. But on the third day when Pickett's Charge kicked off they were on perhaps the best spot on the field. As Jimmy Kemper came buy the sent enfilade and flanking fire in on Kemper's right. When Armistead's men got there they turned 180 degrees and used the same tactic on Armistead's left. I read the book. I believe these four regiments were the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th. Attempts to raise a 17th were not successful. And wasn't it Stoughton who commanded this brigade early in it's formation. I seem to recall a fellow named Mosby who gave him a rude awakening one night in Fairfax Courthouse. Stoughton, and quite a number of prisoners and horses were made off with by Mosby and his troopers. Without firing a shot. I NEVER questioned anyone's bravery or courage. Try not be so thin skinned when points are made about a Federal unit's less than stellar history.
