Here are my recommendations for starters.

George Martin

1 - NPS Soldiers & Sailors System to find the unit to which your ancestor served with capsule unit history and roster of individuals -

http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/

2 - Civil War Rosters - http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Lair/3680/cw/cw.html This one and the next two provide information on individual units,

histories, rosters, books, etc.

3 - Regimental History Links - http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/confeds.html

4 - Civil War Regimental History Books, James River Publishing Company - http://www.mosocco.com/regiment.html

He often lists publications relating to individual units

5 - Carol Botteron's Civil War Units - http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/unit1.html Provides unit websites and so called "experts" on individual units

Last but not least, a Goggle search with the unit name will bring up some amazing stuff at times. Also, you will be amazed at what Goggle searches
on any given subject will yield, try "Civil War Richmond" for example.

And then, If you really want to get serious, try the Civil War Unit Bibliographies listing at the U. S. Army Military History Institute, Carlisle Barracks, Pa holdings - http://www.ahco.army.mil/site/finding_aids_brief.jsp
