Not so amazing and it is really quite simple, when you think about it and don't overthink things with an attitudes contaminated by todays morality. It was those slaves home too which was being invaded and war was being fought against a way of life that was secure and stable to them.
Being the master of ones own destiny is a scary thing to a lot of people. Especially when NOT being that master is the only way of life you have ever known. There are BILLIONS of people, living under the rule of dictators and communist, in this world today, who are not the masters of their own destiny. It is not an uncommon lifestyle. And appearently those people are comfortable with it because they don't know a different way of life, or in a lot of cases even care to know that freedom.
We even have the same problem today, but in a different form, in this country. How many people are looking for the Government to be the answer to their day to day needs rather than taking charge of their own destiny? Depending on others for your needs, even the government, is another form of slavery.
