Pam, I'm confused by your statement that "it seems she was the only female to do so". Are you referring to women who received a pension? If so, that's not correct because Sarah Emma Edmonds and Jennie Hodgers received them as women in the ranks. There may have been others, but I don't have my research in front of me right now and these are the only two who come to mind.
