Is there any way to find how many did that on the Confederate side? I know a GGUncle did because he was needed to run a ferry that was used a lot in Georgia. I think his brother, an officer who owned the ferry, paid it. The Uncle was in the army for a short time but I can't find anything telling me he may have been ill or wounded that may be a more valid reason for his paying to stay out.
