That's where the states right issue comes into play. If Southerners weren't engaged in the issue of whether or not slavery was permitted in the territories, they could have united behind Douglas. As it was Douglas fare poorly in most Southern states because most Southerners rejected his position on "squatter rights".

It wasn't ego or self-promotion. Democrats split over slavery in the territories.
