Everyone - not just people in California - knew this was the Bell-Everett ticket. My earlier post attempted to make the point that peope knew the Constitutional Union party was composed of former Whigs. As county results from North Alabama counties show, Whigs did poorly in most elections, including this one. One might think that Democrats having Unionist leanings (and that covered a majority before the election of 1860) would support this party. You can see from results in non-plantation counties that didn't happen.
Democrats with Unionist leanings tended to support Douglas, the national Democratic candidate. Senator Douglas made himself unpopular in most parts of the Deep South by supporting "Squatter Sovereignty": the position that people in a territory could make slavery illegal before statehood. You can see how poorly he did in the State of Mississippi.
