I believe they did, but I haven't found it in contemporary writings yet. I know the Union generals were known to band reporters and "artist" from certain areas of combat. I found a report of a Union general on the Mississippi that was very happy three reporters were killed by Confederates firing from the river bank at their boat. The Harper's Weekly didn't seem to publish any illustrations of known Union dead on battlefields during the war.
