As for the Irish, part of the confusion is that some people do not distinguish slavery from indentured servitude. A great many immigrants from Great Britain in the 18th Century were indentured servants who worked to pay for their voyage to America. They were not expected to be servants for the rest of their lives. Their children were not born into slavery.
