Has anyone ever done any research on the average cost to purchasing land? I have heard that the average cost of an acre of good land in 1860 was approximately $2.00 per acre. If so, would this be a good measure of the real worth of slaves as to their property value. Taxes may also be a good measure since the owners were taxed on the value of their slaves.
