George: Thats a good question. I have researched the battle for a long time and yet have not found any evidence that black confederates were on the firing line. Nevertheless, over 600 teamsters responded to Imboden's call for more men. A rough estimate of the total number of wagons parked along the river and in town on July 6 would be between 1400-1800. Many of the teamsters were African-American. More later.
