Re: Gregg's 1st South Carolina Regiment

A question has been on my mind for many years. My grandfather Joseph.Franklin. Smith was with Gregg's Unit at Poketaligo, S.C. among other places.,I inherited from my father, three brass buttons, supposedly from grandfather's uniform. I note the buttons are stamped Philidelphia, PA.on the reverse side. with no reference to CSA. There is an American Eagle on the face of these buttons. Would these buttons actualy be from grandfather's CSA uniform, or a Union uniform button somehow.? I had the buttons made into cuff links, but I am unsure about thier heritage. Thank you for any help
