The South Carolina in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Newspapers in northwest SC published during wa

Mike --

Period newspapers are a special study, and hopefully someone has done that for South Carolina in the 1860s. I would start at the state archives and in ask each of the major libraries, including cites, towns, universities and colleges.

To determine what newspapers were being published in 1860, you could consult the 1860 census. The state archives should have Schedule VI, the Social Schedule, which gives odd facts and figures for each county: the average wage paid to day laborers, the condition of crops, the number and type of schools, and any newspapers in circulation, the type of publication (weekly, daily) and number of subscribers.

You can also check local histories to determine what newspapers were in existence. You should also check any disertation or thesis about South Carolina during the war. Hopefully someone has already investigated this subject for you. Who knows; you may find something everyone else missed!

Start at the archives, and pack your lunch. I suspect there's quite a bit there, and that's just for starters.
