The South Carolina in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Blakely Cannon captured at Cheraw, S.C.

Art, Thanks for your responce. I do have both references that you mentioned. I have also come across excerpts from soldiers letters & diaries that specifically mention the capture of two Blakely cannon at Cheraw, S. C. and use by the Third Michigan Battery.
While researching the Third Michigan Battery aka. Battery C First Michigan Light Artillery. I have found several references of the Battery taking possession of two Britsh made Blakely cannon captured by Gen. Sherman's soldiers at Cheraw, S.C. on March 3, 1865 and firing them at the Confederate forces across the Pee Dee river. These cannon were sent North at the close of the War as trophies. In 1896, one of these, which had a brass plaque affixed stating that that it had been "Presented to the state of South Carolina by a citizen residing abroad in commeration of the 20th December, 1860",was put on display in Grant Park, Galena, Il. The other one, I belive, still is on display in the Museum at Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Il.
I am interested in learning more of the Confederate history, prior to the capture, of these remarkable Rifled cannon. I understand that they were employed at "Point Battery" on Morris Island, under the command of Capt.J.P.Thomas and Cadets from the Citadel Academy, during the bombardment of Ft. Sumter on April 12, 1861. But the record of use between that date and their capture 4 years later are vague.
