Joe:

From the language quoted, it has to be the little skirmish at Aiken. There is a fair amount of local "stuff" on it; I will try to come up with some I can send to you. Kilpatrick was following the South Carolina Railroad northwesterly, tearing up track, and apparently seeking to reach the Gregg Cotton Mill complex around Graniteville, about five miles east of Aiken. The engagement was fought in the eastern suburbs of what is now Aiken; I believe that at the time it was nothing more than a collection of a handful of houses. Some of the dead of both armies are buried in the church cemeteries in Town. John Jackman, who was in one of the Kentucky regiments in the Orphan Brigade, which had been mounted as mounted infantry, also palyed a part in the little engagement. I am talking off the top of my head, but it should be in his diary, which is in print.
