Re: Pettigrew's Regiment of Rifles, 1860-61

Erik:

There is not one posted on the web, to my knowledge. I am of the impression that at least a partial roster -- that is, some of the companies -- was published in either/or the Charleston Daily Courier or the Mercury, the two leading dailies of the city. I will try to be on the lookout for any of them. The adjutant was Chalreston lawyer Thdodore Gaillard Barker. The officers of the unit offered the services of the Regiment to the Confederate government, but a dispute over the mannero fht eselection of the officers and the length of service forced matters to an impasse, and the regiment disbanded. Pettigrew enlisted briefly as a private in Company A of the Hampton Legion Infnatry, but was elected colonel of a N.C. regiment -- his native State -- and left the unit in Richmond only a few days after he joined the company, to go to Ralieigh to accept the commission. Barker became adjutant of the Legion, and followed Hampton with the cavalry when the Legion was disbanded in August, 1862. He was adjutant of the Cavalry Corps of the Army of Tennessee when it was paroled at Greensboro on 1 May 65.
