I do not have the rosters of the 4 S.C. Infantry in front of me, but all of the data you gave points to an initial enlistment in the 4 S.C.Volunteers (Sloan's). One of the companies was raised at Pendleton, and they enlisted in state service for a term of one year on/about 16 Apr 61. Sent to Columbia, they were mustered into CS service in June, and fought at First Manassas under "Shanks" Evans defending the Stone Bridge, and along the Warrenton Pike. Their terms on enlistment having expired in April, 1862, the majority went home, although a five company remanant under LCOL Charles S. Mattison was formed as the 13 S.C. BN. Most of the men went into the Palmetto Sharpshooters or the 2 S.C. Rifles, although some did join other units, which apparently is the case for Nimrod Holcombe.
