E. Hamp Holcombe and John S. Holcombe
In Response To: Re: David Nimrod Holcombe CSA ()

While all you Holcombes are on this site, I seek your help on two more Homcombes who served with the Hampton Legion.

John S. Holcombe transferred to Company I of the Legion sometime during the Sep-Dec 63 time frame -- the muster rolls for this period are not complete. The file in Compiled Service Records indicates he had enlisted in another unit at Greenville on 26 Nov 61, but I cannot identify him to any such unit. He transferred to Company K of the Hampton Legion ca. Jan 1864, and was killed in a vicious litle skirmish at Dandridge, Tenn. on 17 Jan 1864. The Legion was then facing off with Federal caval;rymen from Indiana and Wisconsin, just to the north and west of Dandridge. The CSR file indicates he was survived by his mother, Rebee Homcombe. I suspect he wa sburied on the field, or in the Presbyterian churchyard there, in an unmarked grave.

E. Hampton (Hamp) Holcombe initially enlisted in E/2 S. C. Rifles at Pickensville on 24 Oct 61, age 30. He is shown as present on the existent rolls of the Rifles until he transferred to Company K, Hampton Legion Mounted Infantry (the Legion had been mounted in April, 1864)he was initially assigned as a teamster, and is shown as present dismounted on the Sep-Oct 64 roll, and simply present on the Nov-Dec 64 rolls, the only ones existent for the Legion in 1864 and 1865. He does not appear on the Appomattox parole lists. He was a resident of Dacusviulle, in Pickens District and signed his documents by mark.

I have drawn a blank in trying to figure out what happened to Hamp Holcombe, and anything else about them. Any information would be appreciated.
