PVT John M. Rowe, age 33, enlisted in Co. A, 14th Bn. SC Cavalry, at Camp Hampton, Columbia, SC, on 2 Jan 1862. This unit became Co. H, 5th SC Cavalry, in Jan 1863. He was detached to the Ordnance Dept. at Pocotaligo, SC, as a gunsmith on 10 Oct 1862, and was last reported on 31 Aug 1864, as absent detached. He died sometime before 1891.

FYI, Camp Hampton was located southeast of Columbia on the lands of LTC Frank Hampton, 2d SC Cavalry. He was the brother of Wade Hampton, and was killed at Brandy Station in 1863.

You can find some more information on the 5th SC Cavalry at http://www.geocities.com/sccavalrycsa/5thCavSC.html

Would greatly appreciate any additional information on your ggf, such as date/place of birth, date/place of death and burial, residence, occupation, etc.
