Re: hospital records in Virginia

Rudy --

No apology necessary. My post was intended to resolve any confusion over the mention of a Confederate hospital at Williamsburg when that town lay behind Federal lines in 1863.

I did hope to learn if you expected to find information in hospital registers that had already been abstracted on cards and filed in individual service files (CSRs). They don't appear in the file in chronological order, so it's up to the reader to do that himself. Using muster roll and hospital cards, it's usually possible to reconstruct periods in which a soldier was absent from his command. Having a detailed history of his regiment at hand, it's then possible to develop reasonable conclusions as to which campaigns and battles he missed.

It's necessary to buffer a soldier's hospital time with travel to and from his command. For instance, if a soldier had been released from a Richmond VA hospital, return to duty = June 18, 1863, it's quite unlikely he would have been present during the Battle of Gettysburg. No one knew exactly where Lee's army was at the time, so soldiers returning to duty would have been directed to some camp inside Confederate lines in Northern Virginia. In addition, many soldiers received furloughs (as noted on pay receipts) at the end of a hospital stay. Those could be extended. Finally, a soldier returning from furlough may have checked himself into a hospital before returning to the army, particularly if he had received a serious wound.

Hopefully this will help you understand what these records really mean.
