U B. Whites enlisted as 4th Corporal in Captain Drury Nunamaker's Company, 3rd Regiment South Carolina Volunteers**, age 22, April 14, 1861 at Dutch Fort for 12 months having traveled 25 miles to rendezvous, residence Lexington District, SC

**The company subsequently became Company H, 3rd Regiment South Carolina Infantry.

Elected Brevet 2nd Lieutenant October 16, 1862 having enlisted May 13, 1862 at Lexington, SC for 2 years [Note - This would essentially be a re-enlistement upon reorganization of the Confederate Army], subsequently promoted 2nd and then 1st Lieutenant, captured at Strasburg, Virginia October 19, 1864 and transferred to Fort Delaware, Del. where he was released on taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States on June 17, 1865.
