The South Carolina in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Lt. U B White, 3rd South Carolina Inf.

THANK YOU!

Your information helped me greatly. I could not trace down his full name. I only knew him as "U.B." Correct on "Whites" as the correct name, that takes a little getting used to.

My interest in Whites came accidentally. A couple of years ago I bought a "Civil War" bible off of eBay. The photos of the bible were fuzzy so the writing was illegible. When I receive the bible it was falling apart.

Written in the front of the bible is "U.B. Whites Bible." Naturally I sought out all the soldiers with the name White, both North & South, and found nothing to match the U. B. initials.

Then I stumbled upon "U.B. Whites" (with an "s" on his name) and better yet found he was a Confederate and a South Carolinian (my direct ancestors fought with Orr's Rifles and 2nd SC Rifles). I ordered his service records and lo & behold there were several receipts/requisitions in there signed by Whites, and the signature matched that in the bible PERFECTLY.

I had the bible professionally restored by the same lady who restored RE Lee's bible and Edgar Allen Poe's bible and it came out beautifully.

I should also add that Whites also wrote in the front of the bible "Picked up on the bloody battlefield of Chickamauga, Sept 19, 1863."

It has been a joy to resurrect Whites bible which had been been in a storage unit in Alaska for decades.

No doubt it was one of his most treasured possessions during the War.
