You are not in possession of his complete records.

Private William Scates was sent to the hospital in Lynchburg sometime in the November/December 1862 period while his regiment was in the Culpepper/Fredericksburg area. He had been last recorded present on the bi-monthly muster roll which would have been conducted the end of October or shortly thereafter. Hence, his hospitalization would not have been greater than two months. He remained on Company M muster rolls until they obtained confirmation of his death.

His records consist of some 31 cards which should provide you with interesting information. They may be obtained through the service noted in the Red enclosed box above. I would suggest you also ask for the Record of Events entries for Companies K & M for the period Nov/Dec 1862.

Scates, 25 year old Farmer, born in South Carolina, enlisted as a Private in Company K, Palmetto Sharp Shooters July 10, 1861 at Summerville, recorded on April 30, 1862 as "Absent, Wounded in Richmond," admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 5, Richmond, Virginia June 1,1862, Slight wound of Thigh, no record of his release, present on the Sept./Oct. 1862 company muster roll, transferred to Company M, n.d., sent to Hospital #2, Lynchburg, Va. n.d., died there January 10,1863, Typhoid Fever, father John Scates filed claim for his pay and allowances on October 10, 1863, Timer Ridge, Union District, South Carolina, settlement made of $170.35 June 22, 1864, his commanding officer, in a letter, Sept. 12, 1863, to his father, noted: " . . . he was a good soldier & I regretted his death very much."

This company took up with Regt. the line of March Nov 21/62 at Culpepper C. H. and continued it ??? 4-1/2 days halting at Camp near Frederisburg, Va. Nov 23 in which vicinity it has since remained.

Record of Events Company M

June 30 to October 31, 1862 stationed in Bivouac near Culpepper

November & December 1862 stationed near Fredericksburg

Left camp near Culpepper on 20 Nov & marched to camp near Fredericksburg. Nothing of interest occurred till 13 December when the action at Fredericksburg came off in which although under fire, the Co. was not in close action. After the sanquinary defeat of the Federals remained quietly in our camp in the vicinity of the city till the present date
