Re: Sick/Wounded Soldier Question

Debbie,
Check with The Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg. There again you will find a wealth of info and people that are willing and happy to assist you. If he is buried in Lynchburg you will find some very detailed information about his wounds/illness and condition at death. Duiguid Funeral Home which is still in existence handled burials at Lynchburg's Old City Cemetery. Mr Duiguid kept the most complete records that I have ever witnessed. In his documentation of the burials, in addition to unit designation and basic service record and location of the victims wounding or disease diagnosis, he usually recorded types of wounds and locations, detailed description of disease and even recorded physical attributes at time of death like height, weight, general appearance, and even recorded the size of the coffin constructed to contain the remains of the dead. I have a relative, Cpl. J. M. Saunders, Company K, 34th North Carolina Infantry that is buried there. I was born and raised in Lynchburg but live east of Richmond now. After additional research on the 34th NC I found over a dozen ancestors in that unit. They mustered in at High Point (the same location that all of my present day family resides in or moved from. The place where my mom and dad met and were married). The staff in Lynchburg is helpful above and beyond the call of duty. Good luck with your research.

Keith
