Also I have done some research with Compiled Service Records and found mistakes in the way they were documented by The National Archieves and all the current books in the Library we use today for research. The compiled Service Records are correct it is just the way they were transcribed. Anyone searching for Confederate Ancestors needs to be sure to check out The Compiled Service Record for theirselves. For Example In the info you sent me on Culpeppers Battery My GG Grandfather was Isaiah Kirby and he has two compiled service records. The first one when he signed up at Camp Heyward in Jan 1861. Well after about a year they wrote another one using his intials which was suppose to be W.I.Kirby but it looks Like a W.J. Kirby. All information in the records for his sign up date and Camp are exactly the same and here is the kicker. At the very bottom of both records the one for Isaiah Kirby says See also: W.J Kirby. At the bottom of the one for W J Kirby its says See Also: Isaiah Kirby. They cross reference each other. Same Soldier. William Isaiah Kirby was the soldier that died at Ship Island Prison Dec 24 1864. I even found this documented at his Church in Effingham SC. When the information was transcribed from the Compiled Service Records this was missed so a extra soldier was created for Culpeppers Company C by the National Archeives. So on all records even on a monument at Ship Island Prison they have W J Kirby as the soldier dieing there. William Isaiah Kirby's name is not documented SC Role of the Dead because of this mistake.I belive the same has happened for soldier Mahoney Kirby in Culpeppers Company C and the W.M.Kirby also listed in that company. The full name of W.M. Kirby was William Mahoney Kirby I have seen his tombstone. Now I need to check his Compiled Service Record. Mike
