My own German ancestors left their home in Siegen (Nordrhein-Westfalen) and came to Virginia in 1712. Their first home on this continent was near Germanna Ford on the Rapidan River. It was named for the German colonists and the British sovereign, Queen Anne. Here's a website on the Germanna colony and germans in Virginia:
