Re: William J. Bensch 3rd Reg South Carolina Caval

Herr Bänsch:

Sorry, I have no specific information on your ancestor, but can tell you that he was a member of the German Hussars. This unit was organized as a volunteer mounted militia company in Charleston about 1859, and was commanded by Captain Theodore CORDES. The German Hussars entered state service at Charleston, on 8 April 1861, and were stationed on Morris Island, and later Sullivan’s Island. They transferred to Confederate service as an independent command on 5 April 1862, and subsequently became Co. G, 3d SC Cavalry. The 3d SC Cavalry spent most of the war in South Carolina on coast defense duty between Charleston and Savannah, Georgia. The regiment was withdrawn to North Carolina after the evacuation of Charleston in February 1865, and was surrendered at Durham Station by General Joseph JOHNSTON on 26 April 1865.

Hope this helps a little.
