Clarification Needed

My great-grandfather, John Ferguson Davis, was a private in Co E, 21st Regiment, SC Volunteers. He enlisted on 8 January 1862 in Chesterfield, SC. We have documentation that he was discharged on 14 January 1863 due to disability. I was recently sent information compiled by a cousin I do not know which gives a timeline of his service. According to this timeline, he was in hospital in Summerville, SC from Sept 1863 to Feb 1864...was captured near Petersburg, VA on 24 June 1864...was imprisoned at Point Lookout, MD from June 1864 until transferred to Elmira Prison, NY in August 1864..was paroled for exchange on 2 March 1865 and sent to Richmond, VA. I am confused as to how all of this could have happened after he was discharged. Would he not have gone home following his discharge? The only explanation I can think of is that there were two J F Davises in the same company and the researcher confused the two of them. How would I find out if this is the case? I would appreciate any explanation to resolve this puzzle for me. Thank you.
