Re: Middle Brook Hospital Cemetery

Lynn,

Have you tried "Bleak House"? I bet that could be a lead.

I combed through two months of Knoxville prison intake/exit notes and trailed the soldiers sent to the hospital from prison. THEN cross referenced w/ the Misc. Hospital Records (w/ the nat'l archives). My conclusion: If a soldier died in any Knoxville hospital during the months of Nov,Dec,64Jan, Feb 65....all burial notes state, City Cemetery. Unfortunately NONE of these men are documented in any cemetery in Knoxville (w/exceptions of a public hanging or being an officer). They are not even on the "undertakers" notes.

Clearly, if a soldier was imprisoned at Knoxville during this time period and then sent to Camp Chase, where he died...his burial place is documented and located...if he died in Knoxville..nothing.

Due to the dire circumstances in Knoxville at the time, it is understandable these soldiers could be buried in a private cemetery...next to a temp hospital or such....but why wouldn't they be on the undertakers notes?

I have noted if a soldier died in mid 64 to 65....in Knoxville there is very little chance to even get any info on potential unmarked grave locations. McClung's reply is , "There is no city cemetery...and he could be anywhere". Whereas, Mr. Calvin Chapelle of Mabry-Hazen House was knowledgeable, obliging and very informative, just no luck. >( Not even on the list of unmarked/mass grave.

The most telling clue I have found as to why these soldiers where undocumented is the Old Grey Cemetery itself. With honesty, Old Grey states, on their webpage, that in Sept. 1864 the Board Members of Old Grey deemed the Confederate money to pay for graves of their soldiers as worthless.

My ancestor was imprisoned (not in conjunction) with Ephraim Shelby Dodd, and died in a Knoxville hospital the same day they hung Mr. Dodd Jan 08,65. Mr. Dodd is buried w/marker at Bleak House. I had hoped my 2nd ggrandfather's unmarked grave would be there.

Lynn, I think you should try Bleak House......I hope you have better luck than I. I have been unable to locate any list as to the unmarked or even marked at Bleak House. Good Luck! Please keep me posted. :)
