John Crawford Vaughn's Brigade suffered 72% killed, wounded, or captured and Big Black River, Miss., those captured were transported to Camp Morton In, then many on to Ft. Delaware, (officers to Johnson's Island) Those that managed to escape into Vicksburg were of course paroled. Vaughn, former sheriff of Monroe Co, Tn relighed heavly on conscription to fill his ranks so desertion and joining the US army was common place. Co A 8th Tn Vol US were all former members of the 61st. They came back to Tn and engaged their former tentmates on several occasions. Some members of the 61st also inlisted into Ind. regts and went west to fight Indians. You'll find several former Rebs in the 8th 9th & 13th Tn Cav.
