Pension files and Military files

My ancestor, Jasper N. McDuffey, apparently enlisted in the TN. 10th Regiment Vol. Cal. (Co. G) as Newton J. McDuffy. I have sent and recieved his complete pension file. I find some interesting and helpful info, but was wondering if I should also send for his Military file.

In his pension applications he states that he was in the hospital quite a bit do to coming down with smallpox.

Anyone out there recieved a military file on their ancestor? Does it contain useful info? Would there be any more info in addition to his pension file?

Also, after the war he moved to AR. He filed pension applications in AR and Kansas (found this on Ancestry.com. Why would he file in Kansas??

Thanks for any help! This is really my first experience researching my ancesors in the war.

Laura
