You didn't indicate whether he was Union or Confederate. I would assume Union.

My experience with Confederate files are that pension application data is extremely limited.

The military Compiled Service Records for Confederates contain much more data.

However, with whatever side, if you want the complete picture, you want to obtain both files. Pension data, which was obtained some 30 or more years later lack particulars. Especially from widows.
