I will relate the story as told to me by two family members who grew up in Jackson, Tennessee. I do not know the time frame for this incident but the General in charge had been in the Mexican Wars, so maybe that will help identify him. One of the family members mentioned Loring and the other brother said Lew Wallace.

Anyway, my GGG grandfather was Hiram King Anderson. He was a resident of Jackson, Tennessee. He died April 6, 1864 so this would be prior to that. Hiram King Anderson had been a soldier for most of his life. First record I have of him was the Creek Indian War of 1812. He served from 6-1-1813 to 5-1-1814. Last record is a letter to his commanding officer dated 4-8-1847, Vera Cruz, Mexico where he asks to be discharged as he is an old man.

Hiram Anderson came to town during the occupation and was bad mouthing Abraham Lincoln and praising Jefferson Davis. He was arrested and taken before the Commandant. The Commandant took one look at him and told the soldiers to release this man because he saved my life during the Mexican Wars.
