thanks - my daughter reminded me that in Ken Burn's "Civil War" on PBS some years ago they quoted something to the effect of 400 (600, no recollection) went to war from Clarksville and only 2(4,6??) returned. I obviously do not remember the numbers, but it was an incredible (and terrible) figure.

My own ancestor, Lt Roderick Gospero Shaw (Florida), was killed on the Dallas Divide Road near Kennesaw Mtn (Atlanta area) trying to interrupt Gen Sherman's uninvited visit on his way to the beach ...
