Re: Battalion
In Response To: Battalion ()

Mr. Jacobson,

I apologize if this may seem elementary but this may help clarify a couple of things for you.

In a regiment during the War Between the States, it could be broken down into two battalions with each battalion being commanded and controlled by either the LTC, one of the MAJ's, or a senior CPT given the circumstances. I do not have my copy of Hardee's Light Infantry and Tactics (Reference School of the Battalion) handy at the moment to give more specifics.

Remember, at this point in the war, regiments were skeletons of their former selves. I bet if you checked the strength of the brigade you will find that it had a strength of not much more than 450 effectives. For maneuver purposes, this would have been broken down as a manuever element that he refers to as a battalion. It is obvious he changed his front (I would have to read the report this evening to visualize it better) to meet a threat. I forget if the first battalion (in accordance with Hardee's Light Infantry and Tactics) is on the left or right of the line of battle. The maneuver would place his brigade with two wings at a right angle.

I hope this helps.

Respectfully,

Gerald D. Hodge, Jr.
