Re: Henry French in the 10th TN. Cavalry

Ms. French,

You will need to trace him through the Federal Census records backward from the last known ancestor you have that positively connects him with them. Ensure you get consistant places of birth, and ages. Example: He can't show up as 40 years old in one census and ten years later be 20 years old, likely not the correct person.

It is possible he was married multiple times. Wives died often. Mortality was high among woman during their childbearing years. That is the reason why it is important to ensure you properly trace the male. Some of the children may match up but watch the ages carefully. The males of the family will likely remain with the father longer than the females (my experience).

You will need to look at other supporting documents if possible like his will or other court records that can be found on microfilm at the state archives or at the county historical society or county court house.

As far as the Compiled Military Service Records, you will need to look at them to see what information is available. No two records are alike and Confederate record's information is often lacking.

I hope this helps.

Respectfully,
