I understand what you are saying, but I think they just didn't want to put the part in about the capture of the flag in the Yankee account. For further confusion, read the 3rd account at http://www.civil-war.com/searchpages/undetail.asp?ID=368
It is another Federal account confirming the first Yankee story re: the bayoneting, but adding a bit about the first Confederate to grab it getting killed himself. It is still feasible that 2nd Sgt. Woltz ended up with it after that.
