Finding "U.S. Soldier"

I would appreciate any help in knowing whether or not there is any hope in finding a relative who is listed on the 1890 TN Special Schedule of Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines, and Widows, etc. as "U. S. Soldier"?? His widow's name is listed as "Kate G. Gotherd, Widow of U.S. Soldier" in Morgantown, 8th Civil District, Rhea County.

From family research, her husband's name might have been "John Gothard" but I have been unable to find his or her name in any of the databases I have been able to search. Would appreciate any input, even if it is to say his name would be impossible to find. Thank you for any help.
