Re: How to research my ancestor?

Now that is a good question. According to a zeroxed page from the 1866 Report of the Adjutant General Roster for Ninth Tennessee Cavalry his name appears typed on the roster as Gustavus R. Brandon, age 45, enlisted May 18.1863 as surgeon. Someone has written along the edge what appears to be a correction and looks like AU, could also be AN. I found him as Gustavus Brandon, I believe, in the 1870 or 1860 Knox County census as Brandon and the age and profession match. But you know census are not always correct. I am researching the Ninth Tennessee Cavalry Field Officers, and as such I am researching him under whatever should be his correct name. I ordered his service record, or maybe it was his pension file, but the archives sent it back as no record. Of course those people up there don't go to any extra effort and if you don't have it right on the button, they return it.

I was careless and did not write my source for his death date, but I found it on something in Knoxville. I go there once a year for limited time, and I just forgot to write my source. It could be wrong. But the person I am researching is the SURGEON OF THE NINTH CAVALRY regardless of his name.
