Re: 14th Iowa Shiloh Burials ROH

Tom I thought your idea about Zach Walker was a very very valid possibility. Not only because of the similarity in names of Zach and Isaac, but especially if a board marker used abbreviations like "Benj." "Jas." or "Zac."

If Zachariah Walker of Company E died before he could be sent home sick and was then indeed buried at Savannah and his board marker became worn enough to only be partially read as " ..ac Walker Company E" it would be quite easy for someone to "fill in the blanks" so to speak, making an effort to get as close as possible. It is a very believable scenario and could lead to an error later on in the ROH.

I now see your point about Jenks. Jenks was identified as dead on the battlefield obviously, as Walker's name is not on that original casualty list. Walker's name is only found as a "casualty" later on.

Clearly then the mistake was not made in trying to identify a body during the first burial. If Jenks was mistaken for Walker at that point Walker's name would have been on the first casualty list not Jenks, so my theory of a "Jenks-Walker" mix up just doesn't work at all.

You are correct, the error had to be made at some point later on when the ROH was compiled. The "Isaac Walker" on the current Shiloh Cemetery website came from the ROH error not from a bad battlefield identification.

You didn't comment on Cheney and Rolan. Do you have any additional information on those men?
