Re: "Tennesseans in the Civil War"

I guess where I am getting confused, because The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System lists JS Cunningham in the 1st Tennessee Cav, but not Carter's 1st Tennessee Cav. There is one listed, but the name is WA Cunningham. He could be in our family but not sure. Carter's has always seemed the logical choice. Family history said one of the bothers was in Ashby's. There must be one or more errors somewhere. Carter's F & L companies were from Claiborne County. I have read accounts of men switching companies within the regiment with and without permisssion. Is this true?
In Tennesseeans in the Civil War it mentions under Carter's Cav Company D "original". This must mean JS Cunningham was in the original formed company. I wish I could just get the full name of JS Cunningham. This might clear up some of the confusion.

Thanks everyone for your help!
