Roy,
It has been alleged that such an atrocity happened. However, there has been scientific examination of the surrounding area and no evidence of mass graves has come to light. Some wounded Federals were killed by the Confederates there, that is not denied, but as to whether it was as large a number as has been expounded, well that seems to have no factual basis. The raider Champ Ferguson was tried and hanged for his part in such actions during that time. You might want ro read, Champ Ferguson, Confederate Guerilla, by Thurman Sensing. It is a good book, albeit one with a strong Pro-Union slant. Also you might want to check out various books by Jeffrey Weaver and Gary Walker. These two gentlemen have made careers of researching obscure subjects of the region.
