It seems when the TN Militia disbanded in the mid-1850's the 154th did as well. The numbers came from the militia districts across the state (which still exist by the way). I live in Montgomery County, TN and we have two districts - the 91st and 92nd and the militia regimetns were to have mustered by those districts.

When the TN volunteer companies started to form in 1859 and 1860 it seems that those that had made up the 154th TN (and some new ones) also reformed. The regiment had too many companies and their letter designations were changed when it was mustered into CS servive from state service in 1861. One or two left the regiment to form an artilery battery and I forget the other.

This really is a fascintating unit and well in need of a good regimental history.
