The Tennessee in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Winfrey Scott , soldier from Fayette, TN

Your ancestor may well have served in the Civil War. According to the Index to Tennessean's in the Civil War, there are 18 men with the last name Scott and the first initial W. There are 6 men with the first initial G. Unfortunately, the Confederate rolls often showed only initials, and not full names. He would have been about 45 plus years, but according to the early conscription act passed September 27, 1862, all men between the ages of 18 and 45 were required to serve in the Confederate forces. In Feb. 1864 this age was changed to include men 17-50. After compiling biographical data on 550 men of Sever County, Tennessee who served in the Civil War, I have found it was not at all that unusual for men of 45 plus to enlist, in fact my oldest recorded age is 62. These older men somtimes accompanied a younger son, not wanting their son to serve alone. And indeed they left many a woman at home to fend for themselves. Naturally, these older men did not fare well the rigors of war, falling to illness and disability rather than in battle. If you are located in Tennessee, the complete records of Tennessee Confederate soldiers are kept at the Archives building in Nashville, as well as the McClung library in Knoxville, and in Memphis, and Chattanooga.
