Robert, just in case my post might have been misunderstood. Federal soldiers and Unionists would never describe anyone as a pro-Confederate partisan. They used terms such as bushwhackers, murderers and guerillas. Civilians who preyed on Confederate supporters, ratted out partisans, or provided aid and comfort to Union troops were "loyal men".

Odds are that your ancestor was just what you suppose, a patriot.
