Further: this John Gatewood serve with his brother Berry Gatewood in the 4th/8th TN Cav, last being paid in April 1863. He married Mary Amelia Shumate c. 1873 TX, and had a daughter Emma born 9-11-1874 near Tyler, TX, died March 20, 1940 Houston. Mary Amelia remarried by 1880 to a Louis Bardot, French born farmer in Kaufman County, TX. The John C. Gatewood of Johnson County was a cousin.
