Gracias, as we now say in north Georgia. I had a little of that but it certainly adds (and confirms) our conjecture. We are really trying hard to figure out what became of him post-war. Like you, we think he wound up in Texas. Larry Stephens and I are just back from Johnson County, Texas. We found that a large part of the Gatewood family there (and a John C. Pemberton, who became a very respected cattleman south of Cleburne). Found JCP's grave, and wife Sarah, but are about convinced it is not our boy. Larry is going to contact a Sam Gatewood who may be able to shed some light on JPG's later life. We have heard he died in a gunfight in Waco, murdered a black youth in Red River County and died in Huntsville, and was on the Texas Rangers want list as a swindler. Really need to find him to complete our book. Thanks for your help. (Two good sources on Gatewood are two Atlanta Constitution article of 4/4/1888 and responses on 5/1/1888 (same paper). Zack
