Thank you Bob and George for your replies!

Bob, you're right, those folks at the Sevier County Genealogical Annex are super nice, and try to be quite helpful. I have had the pleasure of meeting Tim Fisher and his mother Wanda who work there, and they have always steered me to whatever resources they felt might be helpful.

George, in answer to your much appreciated suggestion, here are the particulars:

* Wade Hampton McGill (Magill), b. about 1824, South Carolina
Married Rebecca Graham 26 Jan 1847 in GREENE Co. TN
appears as Hampton Magill 1850 GREENE Co, Hamp McGill 1860 GREENE Co, & Wade H. McGill 1870 GREENE Co, and Wade H. McGill 1880 Blount Co. (census records)

There is a CMSR for "Hamton McGill" having served in Captain John F. Fitzgerald's Comapany N, of the 64th NC Infantry (Confederate), appearing on the Company Muster Roll for 27 Sept to 31 Oct 1862. Enlisted on 27 Sept 1862 by 2nd Lieutenant Edmund Murrell at GREENVILL (sic) (state not specified), for 3 years. That is the extent of the record, which I was able to obtain through the good offices of Alan, Jim, & this outstanding web site!

Thanks to the same folks, I was able to receive a CMSR for one "Hamilton McGill" (note the Hamton vs. Hamilton) who served in Capt. Neilson's Company F, of Day's 12th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion (Confederate), enlisting 1 Sept 1863, joining for duty and enrolling for 3 years or the war, at Caney Branch, GREENE County Tennessee.

The only other Hamilton McGills I've located in and around the Civil War period are in Benton Co. TN, (far west TN) and in Missouri, and I've found no other "Hamton or Hampton McGill"s in that time period.

There is also a CMSR for John Wade McGill, and for Patrick H. McGill, both listed as age 18, enlisting in the Union 3rd TN Mounted Infantry in 1864. They enlisted the same day in Strawberry Plains, but both were from GREENEVILLE TN. A pension application affadavit from GGMA says that John & Pat ran off very young to join the Army (had to have lied about their ages as they were only 16 & 15). These are Hamps 1st two biological sons. All from GREENE Co. TN.

I'm wondering, am I trying to be TOO exact, or is the info I have reasonably sufficient to say that the Hamton and Hamilton McGill identities, are one and the same person, who, for any one of a variety of reasons, seperated from the 64th NC Inf and took up with Day's 12th TN CAV? This is one thing I would like to firm up if possible. Alan suggested to me once that a simple transcription error of the name Hampton to Hamilton might be the source of the question, which makes a lot of sense, and since I never saw the origninal document, is a very real possibility. The opinion of you gentlemen would be both valued and appreciated as well, on whether there is more that I reasonably can do to establish or deny this linkage, and the probablity of it being one & the same. I must confess my minimal & "amateuresque", research abilities.

Thank You Again,
ROY
