One thing you might want to do is ask, "was this person ever wounded?" I know sometimes
the men were wounded, went home to heal, and came back to find their group was long gone.
So, that man would join up with the nearest unit and continue fighting.
I know because of the pension application that my gg grandfather who was raised at Mifflin,
Tenn. but had joined the 8th Arkansas CSA with his first cousins, because he had moved there, was shot
at Shiloh. After his brother took him home in early April of 1862, on the 4th of July he sat out to catch up
with his men who had gone on to Kentucky.
The difference between Hamilton and Hampton could be simply a matter of hearing. My mother's
family is well known for being hard of hearing, so something that simple could have caused a mistake.
Good luck in your search.
