We can be reasonably sure you are correct. The skirmish at Monterey involved companies of the 1st Alabama Cavalry. Johnston's plan for attack depended heavily on the element of surprise. Southern cavalry patrols, even in some strength, wouldn't have alarmed the Yankees. However, if Confederate commanders had allowed infantrymen to become involved in fire-fights during the advance on Pittsburg Landing, their hopes of success would have been compromised.
